Ashia Woods Signs with Kansas State University!

Family, friends, and coaches joined WCS senior Ashia Woods Wednesday, November 10th to witness her signing her letter of intent to play basketball at Kansas State University. Coach Terrence Phox paid tribute to Ashia and her dedication to the sport, calling the day “a very special day for Ashia, the Wichita Collegiate girls’ basketball program, and the WCS community as a whole.” One factor leading to Ashia’s selection of K-State was the opportunity to play close to home so that friends and family could attend her games. Congratulatons, Ashia! We look forward to watching you play!

WCS Student Wins Award at Tallgrass Film Festival

WCS student Parker Smitherman (2011) was honored as the first Kansas filmmaker from Wichita to win the Audience Appreciation Short Film category for his film Persistence.

WCS Alumni Hoops Classic

Attention WCS Alumni: We have a big game coming up on Friday the 26th of November—it’s with you! We think we have pretty nice teams this year and we are looking forward to the great competition that you always provide us. You will give us our first test, and we are looking forward to it. Now, I know that some of the Alumni base is aging a little bit, I have been hearing a wide range of excuses the last couple of years and I am just hoping that you are still able to rise to the challenge—you know what they say—shoulda, coulda, and woulda won’t get it done! Hope to see as many of you as are in town on the 26th.

2010 Boys Basketball Preview

Every good coach knows when to put his foot down. For 21 seasons it’s been Mitch Fiegel’s go-to move.

When he wants a player’s attention on the court, Fiegel stomps. Same thing when he disagrees with a call or when he’s frustrated by poor play. He even mixes in a tap or two when he’s happy.

But all that stomping has come at a cost.

“My right knee doesn’t have any cartilage left. It’s bone on bone,” said Fiegel. “I tried clapping last season, but it’s just not the same.”

2010 Girls Basketball Preview

Terrence Phox has already come to expect a lot from Ashia Woods. Lockdown defense, shooting, scoring, speed, athleticism. In a word – everything.

This year, he’s hoping for a little more.

“It’s a given that she can average 20-plus points, eight to 10 boards, 6 steals,” said Phox. “My challenge for her is to make her teammates better.”

That could mean the difference between another good season and a potentially great one. The Lady Spartans are coming off back-to-back 20-win campaigns. Two years ago, they were state runners up. Last season ended with a painful substate finals loss to Garden Plain. Woods’ ability create open looks for teammates may be just the thing to finally get them over the hump.

2010 Football Recap

The typical Collegiate metric of state titles and league championships need not apply here. It’s hard not to be pleased with 2010’s second round playoff exit and AVCTL-IV runner-up status, if only because so much of it was so completely unexpected.

“We obviously want to win everything, but I was very happy with the way things came out,” said head coach Bill Messamore. “Coming into a new league and competing against schools twice our size – I think we answered a lot of questions.”

Namely, is the Collegiate program for real? Could they reload after graduating the most talented class of athletes in school history? More importantly, could they do it while navigating their toughest ever regular season schedule?

Yes, yes and yes.
