Upper School: 2nd Generation Spartans

By: Lisa Schooler  Jack Guthrie '13 son of Lizanne Guthrie '78 remarked that he is named after Jack Chesky '72 whose life was taken in a tragic car accident.  Sage Farha '13, daughter of Cliff Farha '86 and Laura Madison Farha '83, talked about her dad erasing all his detentions off of Mrs. Hill's computer! Houston, Hunter, and Hayley Cusick, sons and daughter of Trey Cusick '89 and Laura Brim Cusick '88, talk about a time when their parents renamed their economics teacher, Doug Glenn, to Goud Nnelg (Doug Glenn backwards).  They had many stories about this teacher, starting with the time they took the tires off his car to to the time Mr. Glenn was their chaperone on their senior trip.  This time they ambushed him at night in his hotel room, jumped on his bed, and sprayed him with shaving cream! Grace and Salem Cusick, daughter and son of Nick Cusick '88, reported that their father Nick was standing in the hallway with Brian Drevets '81 and, on a $20 bet, he said, "What would you do if...?" Then Nick yanked his tie so hard, it had to be cut off to remove it! Robbie Egan, son of Cindy Siedhoff Egan '94, reports that his mom said, "Our class was big into gags and really went after the economics teacher, Mr. Beers.  For April Fool's Day, we moved his entire classroom to the commons area.  We even got the approval from the Dean, Mr. Devin, ahead of time. WCS still had Interim classes in January (best month ever!!!) and Mr. Beers taught guitar.  One day, the boys took all of his guitars and put them in the ceiling.  He really hated us! I still remember the look on Jeff Cast's face during lunch when we found out the Challenger had exploded.  We did not have tv's in the classroom, but were being told up to the minute information."  Lily Shawver, daughter of John Shawver '80, said that when her dad John was in the sixth grade, the preferred method of communication was writing notes/messages on small pieces of paper and passing them to the intended recipient. This took place during class and was quite a distraction for everyone. Mrs. Hill took note of what was taking place and, since Facebook and Twitter did not exist, she had to come up with a different solution. She designed and fabricated a class mailbox so everyone had their individual post office box. Everyone was allowed to write notes and put them in the recipient's mail box, outside of class time of course. What a great solution! Children of our alumni above, all students in the Upper School!
